History

The Woolbridge Motor Club is based in and around Dorset and was formed in 1960 by employees of the Atomic Energy Establishment at Winfrith, and the Army Gunnery School at Lulworth. An ancient bridge in the village of Wool, mid-way between these two establishments, gave the club its name, and is featured in the club’s badge. In the early years, the club promoted road rallies, then autocross, and speed hill climbs from the late 1970’s. We are now one of the largest clubs in the South of England with about 500 members.

The club currently runs speed hillclimbs at two venues: Wiscombe Park in Devon and Charmouth in Dorset, and a Classic trial. However other events are run in which everyday road going vehicles can be used along with classes for modified cars. These comprise of Car and 4x4 trials (attempting to drive up grass or mud slopes), Autotests and Autosolos (driving a set course around maker cones against the clock, both on tarmac and on grass), and evening navigational rallies, where the ability of someone on the maps outweighs other considerations.

We also have a thriving four wheel drive section of the club, which put on a series of events each year, these are a more difficult form of car trials to fully test the off road capabilities of their vehicles.

In addition to our own events we provide marshals to help run other events, including a round of the national stage rally championship, and a section of the MCC Classic ‘Exeter’ trial each year.

There is also an active social calendar, involving a number of skittles matches and quiz evenings with other motor clubs and motoring bodies, film or video shows, treasure hunts, and the annual Dinner Dance and Awards Presentation evening in December. In addition a monthly club magazine is published and posted to members.

2007 Stamp Collection Devon Air Ambulance Trust Stamp Collection

2007 Stamp Collection

You will have read about the exciting speed hill climbing that goes on at Wiscombe Park, Southleigh but there is also a charitable side to the activities this year. Woolbridge Motor Club, who organise three events at Wiscombe, heard that the Devon Air Ambulance Trust collect used postage stamps and asked drivers to bring them along to their events. Gwyneth Wright, Woolbridge’s event secretary said ‘When I heard the air ambulance trust collects used stamps I thought we might be able to help. I get lots of stamps through people sending in their entries to me and hoped drivers would bring some along to the meetings too. They have been great; we’ve had stamps brought from all over the country and hope to continue helping the air ambulance next year too.

Other clubs who use the venue are also supporting the idea and it is hoped that a bin liner full of stamps will be presented to a representative of the air ambulance at the MG Car Club meeting on Saturday 8th September.
