The latest in year positions for the Woolbridge 2016 / 2017 Victor Ludorum are now on the Championships page following the latest club event.

Unless Mark Hoppe has plans to enter Charmouth (and win his class both days) then it looks like Gary Morris is the 2016-17 victor ludorum champion. Hopefully everyone is included, please get in touch now if you think you've been missed - speed event marshals are most likely to be omitted. There are marshalling opportunities at Charmouth 23rd/24th September for anyone who would like to fill that gap in their scoring and move into the top ten - a 4x4 tow vehicle would be useful to retrieve broken down cars etc., in the absence of Roger.

Entries for both Saturday and Sunday B events are full, with 14 reserves on Saturday and 27 on Sunday. There are just 4 places remaining for the National A event, as at 23rd June, so I will be unable to increase the maximum entry levels for the B events, as I first thought possible.

Woolbridge Wiscombe Park Hillclimbs on 29th & 30th July 2017

Entries for the Sunday National B event are full, with 9 reserves from the various championships (who will get priority if places  become available) and 12 more non-championship hopefuls. There are a few places remaining for the Saturday National B event.

The National A event is currently undersubscribed, and any shortfall at the closing date (17th July) will enable us to bring in some of these reserves.

If you are in one of the championships, you can still put in an entry and wait until closing date to see what is available. You may hold BACS/internet banking payment until places are confirmed, or send a cheque which will only be banked after the closing date, or shredded if unsuccessful.

Secretary of the meeting

9-June-17

Woolbridge triallists, Shawn Franklin and Mark Hoppe have been out and about in both the regional and British Championships with mixed fortunes.

In late May both ventured to Ross Motor Clubs "Spring Fling" at Newent, this was round 3 of the ASWMC championship. The chaps opted to save their best cars for the following weekends double header in North Wales and ended up driving Mark's hard working blue Saxo.

A great battle saw Mark lead brother in law, Shawn by a few points all day and land the overall win- defending the title from last year. Shawn duly slotted in to take the class win. The duo now occupy the top spots in the ASWMC championship.

Turning their attention to the MSA and BTRDA national championships, saw a long trip to North Wales and Anglesey over the bank holiday weekend. Mark had problems with his developing g Dutton, meaning a retirement after round 1 of the first of the weekends  events....... disappointing, after being ahead of Championship leader Barrie Parker in his Westfield at that stage.

Shawn had a good day, but made a silly mistake late on " don't follow the tracks" and hurt his hunt for his first overall win with an 11 score.  Shawn held onto 1st in class but missed out on the overall win to another debutant victor - Trevor Moffat from the famous trialling and autotest family.

Sunday saw Mark taking up the offer of a guest drive in Rupert North's little yellow Mini........it was a squeeze! The day on Anglesey ended with Mark finishing a polite distance behind the cars owner in 2nd.....but having enjoyed his day. Shawn had the bit between his teeth for a win and started well and continued in the same manner.....taking points out of Trevor on several hills each round. During round 5 Trevor retired but was already beaten and it was then just left to the mathematics to verify Shawn as the OA winner......his first OA win at any level and his first BTRDA crested spoon.

A great weekend for Shawn now sees him leading the BTRDA gold star championship and lying 2nd in the MSA championship behind Barrie.....having done 1 round less.

So the pedigree coming out of WMC is something to be proud of in the trialling world. Good luck to Shawn for the challenge over the remaining 5 rounds of the season.

Revised MSA Child Safeguarding Policy published

The Motor Sports Association (MSA) has launched a revised child safeguarding policy to help provide a safe and positive environment for all young people in motorsport.

All MSA-registered clubs are required to adopt the policy, which has been designed to be more user-friendly. There is a template policy document that clubs can use, plus a range of guidance documents on topics such as DBS checks.

The policy includes – but is not limited to – a requirement for all clubs to:

Appoint one or more Child Safeguarding Officer (CSO)

Inform the MSA Lead Safeguarding Officer of the CSO and maintain current personal contact details

Include child safeguarding matters at their management committees and keep records of all discussions

Provide support for the CSO and ensure they are included in club communications.

Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “The welfare of young people in motorsport is paramount. The MSA Child Safeguarding Policy confirms that all children have the right to enjoy the sport safely, and aligns us with other national governing bodies by providing clear guidance for clubs on how to achieve this.”

The MSA Child Safeguarding Policy can be found in the Policies & Guidelines section of the Resource Centre on the msauk.org website. Any related queries should be directed to safeguarding@msauk.org.

Editor’s notes:

The MSA is the sole national governing body for four-wheel motor sport in the UK, as recognised by the world governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The MSA is a not-for-profit organisation (limited by guarantee) comprising around 750 affiliated motor clubs, which are represented by 13 Regional Associations nationwide. The MSA represents approximately 30,000 competition licence holders and 9,500 volunteer marshals and officials, and issues permits for around 5,000 motor sport events every year.

“Many people have contributed to this long campaign and we must first give special mention to my predecessor as MSA Chief Executive, Colin Hilton, for starting down this road seven years ago. Thanks also to our former Director of Communications, Ben Taylor, for his relentless lobbying, and to our Rallies Executive, Ian Davis, for his invaluable contribution to the required legislation. We owe a further debt of gratitude to Ken Clarke MP and Ben Wallace MP and for their tireless support in Westminster.”

Andrew Jones MP, Transport Minister, said: “Britain is a world leader in the motorsport industry and this will further cement our position. There are already races of this kind in some areas of the British Isles which are incredibly popular, attracting thousands of spectators. New road races will boost local economies through increased tourism and hospitality, and offer community opportunities such as volunteering.”

Among those welcoming the news was the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship, which stages events in capital cities across the globe. It said: “The FIA Formula E Championship warmly welcomes the news that the UK’s Road Traffic Act has been amended, permitting the closure of roads and allowing for the possibility of regulated motor racing on closed highways.

“We recognise the key role that the MSA, and its Chief Executive Rob Jones, have played in making this happen. This move considerably helps the prospect of the London ePrix returning to the streets of the British capital.”

Nigel Mansell CBE, 1992 F1 world champion, was equally enthusiastic. He said: “I have seen first-hand the very significant impact of motor sport on the economy of the Isle of Man and Jersey, so this is a great move forward for the sport and will bring visitors and pride to parts of the country that wish to stage such events. I am delighted that this government is embracing motorsport, which will assist the UK's world-leading position and improve the sport's ability to help provide opportunities and focus for young people.”

Meanwhile Tendring District Council (TDC) has been in discussions about the possibility of bringing an event to the District. Tanya Ferguson, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Tourism and Culture, said: “There is no doubt at all that hosting such an exciting event would be a massive draw and bring people into our area to boost the economy. Our talks are at a very early stage but we are very interested in the prospect and hope that the idea can be developed with Tendring.”
