Mark Hoppe leads the way, but several of us are in close contention and there are still opportunities to score points or tick the marshalling box. The upcoming grass autotests could be an opportunity for some of the 4x4 & 12-car people to try something different.

Priority has to go to entrants in the British Hillclimb and Leaders Championships, then entrants in the other championships. Entries from anyone who is not registered for any of the championships (including Woolbridge Motor Club members) will be held until the closing date to see if any places are available. These non-championship entries should complete the entry form and click on ‘Submit’ but do not make payment until you are contacted to confirm that a place is available. Everyone else, payment is required with your entry.

A new advert has been added to the Woolbridge Classifieds page.

Woolbridge members Shawn Franklin and Mark Hoppe ( AKA The Trialling Chumps) Travelled to Long Compton in Oxfordshire to compete in the Warks Trial which formed Round 3 of the BTRDA and MSA championship ( as well as rounds of the Cotswold MSG and AWMMC championships)

Franklin is the reigning gold star champion and Hoppe was out for his second event in the Dutton Melos he has been fettling over the last 12 months.

The hot day was challenging and the 8 sections laid out by experts Steve Courts and Dave Oliver were giving the drivers something to think about from the start. Hoppe found everything working well and had dropped a meagre 1 point by the end of 16 hills at lunch.

Franklin in his Saxo was also on good form and was leading his class from previous round winner Barrie Parker in his Fiat Seicento.

The afternoon session saw the hills tightened at the final gates and Hoppe dropped a further 9 in round 3 and a closing round of 1 saw him finish on 11 points- which was a dominant score with next in class on 35.

Franklin sustained his performance and fought off the pressure of Yorkshire superstar Henry Kitching to win the class.

When the calculations were done it was a great result for Woolbridge taking 1&2 overall with Hoppe edging out brother in law Franklin 50 to 75% in index. Overall, a great showing by the WMC duo at this national event.

Next stop is North Wales for a double header at the end of May. Currently Franklin tops the BTRDA championship, level with Parker.

Hoppe’s win leap frogs him into 3rd and also means he joins the small group of drivers who have managed overall wins at National level in both FWD and RWD formats.

Woolbridge 2017/18 Car Trials Championship Final Results, see Car Trials and Championships pages.

The Upwey Cup car trial was the final round of our club championship and what a great well supported year it has been. Unfortunately we had to cancel one round and the last 2 were a bit wobbly due to the weather but we achieved a good 6 events so only 1 score would need to be dropped if all 6 were entered.

With the last round clashing with a national championship event Mark had already won the championship from the first 5 events but brother in law Shawn unfortunately would lose second place to Craig Hayward who has returned this season with a vengeance but will have to look for a new car next year following the demise of the Saxo. Craig has secured first in the Silver League but will not collect that trophy as he is second in the main league and will receive that trophy, he will also become a named driver next year so will not bother the Silver League next year! Son Harvey and wife Vikki will still be keeping him honest in whatever vehicle he turns up in.

Although Mark won the championship by a clear 6 points the pressure is increasing behind as the next 5 places were covered by less than 5 points which after 6 events is pretty close.

Will Lawrence after his excellent Upwey Cup result finished second in the Silver League and will take home the trophy as Craig collects his Main League award. Will gets to compete in the Silver League for another year but he has to be candidate for better things next year. Gary Morris has produced consistent results to follow Will home in the Silver League with last year’s winner Jez Searle getting the third award after missing the last 2 rounds.

Class 6 for cars that don’t fit into the normal classes has been won by Dominic Bishop in his special but he really only had one other contender and that was his co-driver, we hope to see more entries in this class next year as there are rumours of other cars!

We have to make comments about our organisers and marshals for all of their efforts this year without whom there would be no championship, we trust we are doing what you want but are always happy for comment and constructive criticism!

All in all another great championship with 53 contenders, thank-you all for competing and we hope to see you all in the Autumn, or other events before then.

Get your old or new car ready for the Taster / Testing Event on the 15th September or try a few ASWMC events before then.

Andy Webb, Trials Championship Secretary.

Racing Drivers Wanted

The Club would like to again enter a Racing Team in the annual Clay Pigeon Charity Kart Racing Relay. The racing will be held on Sunday 02 September 2018 with practice sessions preceding the four hour race. A team of six drivers would provide two twenty minute sessions each.

The event raises about £1500 for the Club’s chosen charity and the cost for each driver will be £50 – so get out there and pull in some sponsorship to contribute to your entry fee. The date does conflict with the 5 Clubs Wiscombe Hillclimb Meeting but if you can join us at Clay Pigeon please let me have your expression of interest as soon as possible in order for me to progress with planning. Please email me on social@woolbridge.co.uk   - Bob Blackstock
