An event requires people to run it, before any competitors can take part. This can involve observing a trials section to judge how far a car has climbed, or using a stopwatch to time an autotest competitor. In addition to these tasks, someone has to take entries, set up the sections or tests and add up the scores. Marshalling can provide an insight into what goes on behind the scenes, and is a good introduction which may help you think about which types of event you would like to enter, and which cars might be suitable.
We also need course marshals for our speed events, the hillclimbs at Wiscombe. This role is much like that of the ‘orange army’ of course marshals seen at F1 or BTCC races – ensuring safe running of the event and perhaps helping retrieve errant cars that have left the course.
